RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the continued Iranian aggression against Jordan, reiterating its solidarity with the country and its people in all measures taken against the Iranian attacks, which violate international law and the principles of good neighborliness.

The  Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Thursday, stressed the importance of an immediate halt to the blatant Iranian attacks on Jordan and other countries in the region.

It emphasised the need for serious steps to preserve the security and stability of the region and its people.

Jordan downs five Iranian missiles

The Jordanian army said Thursday that it intercepted and shot down five missiles launched from Iran toward the country, marking the fourth consecutive day of such incidents.

In a statement, the military said its air defence systems detected and intercepted the missiles early Thursday. No casualties or damage were reported.

The latest incident follows a series of similar interceptions this week. On Wednesday, Jordan said it had downed five missiles, after intercepting one drone on Tuesday and two drones on Monday.

UN Chief Urges Support for Diplomatic Efforts to End Middle East War

UN chief expresses concern over renewed hostilities

Earlier, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the US and Iran to cease fighting and return to diplomacy.

“The Secretary-General has been worried for some time that if the parties do not return to negotiations, you could have a widening of the conflict, and that seems to be what has been happening in recent hours,” Deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq told reporters in New York.

“These are not positive developments, and he wants to make sure that the parties can cease fighting and again return to the diplomatic efforts, including the mediation efforts being pressed forward by Pakistan, Qatar and others.”

US launches heavy strikes on Iran as Middle East conflict escalates

The strikes, confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM), shattered hopes of renewed diplomacy and signalled Washington’s return to direct military action against Iran.

“The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on US forces based in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said, adding that American forces struck dozens of IRGC military command centres and other strategic targets.

Iranian authorities said US missiles hit areas near Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province and around Abadan in Khuzestan province during the early hours of Thursday.
