RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday condemned Colombia’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, describing the move as contrary to international law and relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.
Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s condemnation and denunciation of Colombia’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The Kingdom affirmed that this recognition explicitly contravenes the relevant United Nations resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 497, issued in 1981, which deemed Israel’s imposition of its laws, jurisdiction, and administration over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights null and void, with no legal effect, the Foreign Ministry stated.

Saudi Arabia stressed that such positions do not contribute to achieving peace; rather, they diverge from the long-standing international stance on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, reinforce the logic of imposing faits accomplis, and undermine efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The Kingdom reiterated its steadfast position that the Golan Heights are occupied Arab Syrian territory, and that any measures or decisions seeking to alter its legal status do not establish any rights or confer legitimacy upon such actions.
Saudi Arabia called on the government of Colombia to reconsider its position, adhere to international law and relevant resolutions of international legitimacy, and continue contributing to efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and a just and lasting peace in the region.

On Tuesday, Syria strongly condemned Colombia’s recognition of “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Golan Heights, calling the move a violation of international law and UN resolutions.

In a statement, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said Colombia had cited security considerations in recognising Israel’s claim to the strategic plateau, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.
Syria rejected that reasoning as inconsistent with international law and reaffirmed that the Golan Heights are an “inseparable part” of Syrian territory.
The ministry said Colombia’s position violated the UN Charter, the principle that territory cannot be acquired by force, and UN Security Council Resolution 497.
Syria also cited UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ position that the Golan Heights are Syrian territory. The UN considers the area occupied Syrian land.
The ministry said support for the annual UN General Assembly resolution on “The Syrian Golan” had increased, with 123 countries backing it in 2025, compared with 97 in 2024.
