Two Egyptian border guard officers were killed during a military operation targeting illegal gold mining activities along Egypt’s southern border with Sudan, Colonel Gharib Abdel-Hafez, spokesperson for the Egyptian Armed Forces, announced on Thursday.
According to Colonel Abdel-Hafez, the campaign to combat unauthorised gold mining was launched in the Eastern Desert in June. The first three phases of the operation have been completed, while the fourth phase is scheduled to begin on Saturday.
The Egyptian Armed Forces stated that the operation aims to strengthen state control over national territory and protect the country’s natural resources.
