KYIV: A deadly rocket attack in the town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine on Saturday resulted in the deaths of eight people and left 13 others injured, according to Ukraine’s interior ministry. The ministry reported on social media that a residential building, a printing house, and three cars were torched during the assault. The ministry attributed the attack to Russian rockets.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Donetsk region where Lyman is located, stated that the town was targeted by Russian forces using multiple rocket launchers around 10:00 am. Lyman, an important rail hub, was initially seized by Russian forces but later recaptured by Ukraine’s army in October.

Russian Offensive Operations in Ukraine

This incident comes amid reports of Russian offensive operations in the area throughout the week. Ukrainian forces have been engaged in a counteroffensive to regain control of Russian-controlled territories in the eastern and southern parts of the country. However, their progress has been limited due to formidable Russian defensive lines. Despite more than a month of fighting, Ukrainian forces have only managed to reclaim a few hundred square kilometers and a small number of villages.

In a separate incident in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, two civilians were reportedly killed overnight by Ukrainian fire, as stated by an official from the emergency services, quoted by TASS news agency.
