MOSCOW, Russia: Russia accused Israel on Monday of carrying out an “unacceptable” attack on a diplomatic complex in Damascus, after air strikes destroyed the Iranian embassy’s consular annex in Syria.

The foreign ministry in a statement said that on the evening of April 1, the Israeli Air Force hit the Iranian consulate building in Damascus.

“We strongly condemn this unacceptable attack against the Iranian consular mission in Syria.”

Israel, however, did not comment on the reported attack. Iranian and Syrian officials have also accused Israel of staging the airstrikes.

Russia condemned any attacks on a diplomatic building as “unacceptable” as Moscow called on the Israeli leadership to stop provocative acts of armed violence against Syria and other neighbouring countries, according to the ministry.

A top Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander was among eight persons reported to have been killed in the airstrikes amid heightening regional tensions.

Iran has vowed a firm response to the strikes with fears of even further violence between Israel and Iran’s allies.
