LONDON: Authorities have warned commuters they may face significant disruption on Tuesday with the start of national rail strikes exacerbated by freezing temperatures across the United Kingdom.
The railway strike has paralyzed life in some areas due to drastically reduced rail services, and the weather could hinder commuting on roads.
Hopes of a main breakthrough in the rail dispute were shattered after Rail Network workers rejected a pay offer as members of the rail, maritime and Transport union (RMT) began two 48-hour strikes at Network Rail – and 14 train companies from Tuesday until Friday.
The Met Office has alerted that it will be a freezing weather start for many across the country on Tuesday morning, with snow covering many parts of the UK, leading to travel disturbances.
Trains services will run from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm during the strikes, although many parts of the country will have no services at all, including most of Wales and Scotland.
RMT workers at Rail Network will also strike from 6 pm on Christmas Eve until 6 am on December 27.
