FRANKFURT: A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Lisbon was diverted to Lyon in France after a passenger’s powerbank caught fire mid-flight, the airline said.
The incident occurred on Saturday aboard an Airbus A321-200 carrying 198 passengers as it was flying towards the Portuguese capital.
A Lufthansa spokesperson said the crew immediately secured the battery in a protective bag specially designed for lithium batteries. No one was injured in the incident.
The pilot decided to divert the aircraft to Lyon as a precaution, and the flight landed safely without further incident. The passengers resumed their journey on Sunday after spending the night at a hotel.

Powerbank-related incidents have occurred on other flights in recent years. In March 2025, a Hong Kong Airlines Airbus A320 was diverted to Fuzhou after a powerbank caught fire in an overhead cabin compartment. The crew extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported.
