Peru’s Central Crowned Best Restaurant in World as Lima Dominates Top 50

LIMA: The culinary scene in Lima, Peru, shone brightly as Central, a renowned Peruvian restaurant, secured the top spot in the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards for 2023. Lima further showcased its gastronomic prowess by claiming four spots in the top 50, more than any other city.

Central, led by Virgilio Martinez and Pía Léon, mesmerized food enthusiasts with its exceptional dishes crafted using Peruvian ingredients and techniques. The restaurant’s unique concept takes diners on a journey through 15 diverse Peruvian ecosystems, ranging from the depths of the Pacific Ocean to the soaring heights of the Andes at 4,200 meters. Notably, Central is the first South American establishment to be crowned the “Best in the World.”

The highly anticipated awards ceremony, often referred to as the Oscars of the culinary world, took place at the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain. Spain itself demonstrated its culinary prowess, securing six spots in the top 50, with Disfrutar in Barcelona ranking second overall. Additionally, Diverxo in Madrid and Asador Etxebarri in Basque Country claimed the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Italy and France showcased their culinary excellence in Europe, with five Italian and four French restaurants making their mark in the top 50. London, England, also received recognition, securing three spots on the prestigious list.

Asian Restaurants in Top 20

In Asia, Bangkok emerged as a rising culinary destination, as two of its restaurants made their debut in the top 20. Le Du ranked 15th, while Gaggan Anand claimed the 17th spot.

Across the Atlantic, New York City represented the United States with two restaurants making it to the top 50. Atomix climbed the ranks from last year’s 33rd position to an impressive 8th place, earning the title of Highest Climber and Best Restaurant in North America. Le Bernardin, led by renowned chef Éric Ripert, secured the 44th position.

This year’s top 50 list showcases restaurants from 24 different regions across five continents, with 12 establishments making their first appearance on the prestigious ranking.
