ISLAMABAD: The official social media account of the State of Palestine has shared excerpts from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the UN General Assembly, particularly his remarks on the situation in Gaza.

According to the Palestinian mission, the prime minister made special mention of Palestine in his address and drew the world’s attention to the suffering of Palestinian women, children and elderly people.

PM Sharif also questioned whether children in Gaza had the right to live, look forward to a better future and pursue their dreams.

During his address, PM Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Palestine, expressing his concern for ongoing Israeli violence in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Prime Minister Sharif strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying Palestinians, particularly women, children and the elderly, have endured illegal occupation, displacement, suffering and death for generations.

In particular, PM Sharif noted that the forcible eviction of Palestinians in the West Bank “clearly reflects Israel’s genocidal agenda”.

Recalling the case of Hind Rajab, Shehbaz said that last year, I shared with you the heart-wrenching story of Hind Rajab — an innocent Palestinian child brutally shot by Israeli soldiers.

“This year, another tragedy weighs heavy on the heart. This time, it is the anguished cries of the mother of eight-year-old Wafa Aqilah, who ascended as a martyr in this senseless aggression. What should have been her first day at school became, alas, the last day of her life.”

“Does a child born in Gaza not have the right to life, a future and dreams?” Shehbaz asked in his address.

“The tragedies of Hind Rajab, Wafa Aqilah, and countless others will echo through history as an indictment of our collective silence, failure, and inaction,” he added.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan supported an independent, sovereign, viable and contiguous Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

“Pakistan believes that the only just and lasting solution is the creation of an independent, sovereign, viable and contiguous State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,” he reaffirmed.

Pakistan calls for collective action against changes to Jerusalem’s historical status

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar called for a united and sustained Arab-Islamic response to the continuing violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo in occupied East Jerusalem.

He made the call at a Joint Arab League-Group of Four Islamic Countries ministerial meeting on Jerusalem in New York, saying the situation required continued vigilance and a “resolute collective response”.

Dar said continued violations against Al-Aqsa, settlement expansion, settler violence and forced displacement remained matters of serious concern.

He stressed that there could be no ambiguity over the status of occupied East Jerusalem.

“Israel has no sovereignty over the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including its Holy Sites,” Dar said.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Hashemite custodianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, as well as the exclusive jurisdiction of the Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department over Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif.

Dar urged participating countries to build on understandings reached in Amman and translate their shared positions into practical and sustained measures.
