ISLAMABAD: Pakistan marked a significant milestone in its maritime sector as the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), in partnership with global energy company Vitol, successfully completed the first-ever international ship refuelling operation at Gwadar Port.

The landmark operation involved the supply of 2,500 metric tonnes of International Maritime Organization (IMO)-compliant Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) to the UAE-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel ENUGU, marking a significant achievement in Pakistan’s efforts to develop a modern marine fuel supply network.

The fuel supplied during the operation was produced locally by Cnergyico PK Limited at its domestic refinery, reflecting Pakistan’s growing capacity to manufacture marine fuels that meet stringent international environmental and quality standards.

Maritime industry experts have described the development as a breakthrough for Pakistan’s blue economy, highlighting its potential to establish Gwadar as an important regional bunkering hub for international shipping.

The successful refuelling operation enhances Gwadar Port’s profile as a reliable and strategically located alternative for global vessels seeking efficient marine fuel services. The port’s location along key international shipping routes provides an opportunity to attract more maritime activity and support trade connectivity.

The development comes at a time when geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions in traditional shipping corridors are encouraging international operators to explore safer and more dependable refuelling locations.

Gwadar’s emerging bunkering capability could provide global shipping companies with a secure option while contributing to Pakistan’s maritime trade growth.

The initiative is expected to create new opportunities in the country’s logistics, energy and shipping sectors, further strengthening Pakistan’s position in regional maritime commerce.
