ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s edible oils including palm and soybean imports during the five months of the ongoing financial year 2022-23 rose by 12.93 percent and 234.36 percent respectively as compared to the corresponding period of the last year.
During the period from July to November, over 1.269 million metric tons of palm oil worth 1.334 billion US dollars were imported to meet the domestic needs as against the import of 1.334 million metric tons valued at 1.527 billion dollars in the same period last year.
In the meantime, Pakistan imported over 97,945 metric tons of soyabean oil worth 144.094 million dollars for manufacturing vegetable ghee and producing edible products to meet local demands as compared to the imports of 34,672 metric tons valued at 43.095 million dollars in the corresponding period of last year.
Palm oil imports drop in November
However, palm oil imports were reduced by 18.43 percent on a month-on-month basis in November in comparison to the same month last year, the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.
In November, about 284,964 metric tons of palm product worth 318.112 million dollars were imported as compared to the 322,263 metric tons imports valued at 389.991 million dollars in the corresponding period last year.
On the other side, the soyabean oil imports in November rose by 69.32 percent and were recorded at 20,040 metric tons worth 32.362 million dollars as compared to the 14,200 metric tons of imports valued at 9.113 million dollars in November 2021.
