ISLAMABAD: Three officers of the National Highways and Motorway Police were killed on the M-5 motorway near Uch Sharif after a passenger bus travelling from Karachi to Multan crashed into their patrolling vehicle from behind, officials said on Monday.
The officers who lost their lives were identified as Sub-Inspector Muhammad Mushtaq, Assistant Sub-Inspector Nasir Abbas, and Constable Osama. Motorway Police described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that the officers were performing routine patrol duties of ensuring the safety of motorway users.
Rescue teams, including senior officials such as the sector commander and a DSP, rushed to the site to recover the bodies and clear debris. The authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the accident.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “deeply tragic and avoidable,” and offered condolences to the families of the fallen officers. Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan also pledged a “complete and transparent investigation” to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
The Motorway Police have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on high-speed stretches of the M-5, and highlighted the risks associated with long-distance passenger travel on busy routes.
