Pakistan’s Deputy PM to Address UNSC Open Debate, Urging Renewed Commitment to UN Charter

United Nations, New York: Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar will address the UN Security Council today as Pakistan pushes for a stronger, UN-centered international system amid growing global divisions.

Dar’s busy schedule at the UN headquarters includes a statement at a high-level open debate chaired by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, followed by seven bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He will also attend an evening diplomatic dinner hosted by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative.

The debate, held under China’s Security Council presidency, focuses on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Dar’s engagements aim to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments, and multilateral cooperation during his three-day official visit from May 26 to 28.

UNSC Open Debate: A Statement on Global Peace

Senator Dar will participate in the high-level UN Security Council Open Debate titled “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International System.”

The debate is being held under China’s Presidency of the Security Council, chaired by Foreign Minister Wang Yi at UN Headquarters in New York. Dar will deliver a statement reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the UN Charter and advocating for a rules-based global order.

Diplomatic Marathon: Seven Key Bilateral Meetings

On the sidelines of the debate, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister will hold a series of intense bilateral engagements to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments, and multilateral cooperation.

He will hold bilateral meetings with a range of counterparts, including Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov of Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar of Costa Rica along with Rebeca Grynspan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani of Bahrain, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla of Cuba, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka of the Czech Republic, and Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio of Colombia.

In the evening, Dar will attend a dinner hosted by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, bringing together ambassadors and permanent representatives from various Arab-Islamic and European countries.

The dinner is expected to serve as an informal yet strategic platform for deepening Pakistan’s ties with key regional and Western partners.
