ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial on Tuesday called for a transparent and fair delimitation process of constituencies by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The Chief Justice made these remarks during a hearing of petitions challenging the delimitations of provincial constituencies PS 7, 8, and 9 in Shikarpur, Sindh province.

The Supreme Court bench, consisting of Chief Justice Bandial and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, was hearing concerns raised in a petition regarding errors and irregularities in the delimitation process for these constituencies. The delimitation issue has gained prominence after the approval of the results of the first-ever digital census of Pakistan earlier this month, necessitating a fresh round of delimitations.

Chief Justice Bandial emphasized that the delimitation of constituencies is a matter of public interest and has been discussed in the top court on multiple occasions. He stressed the importance of conducting the delimitation process transparently to ensure the integrity of the electoral system.

Chief Justice Inquires About Timeline for General Elections

During the hearing, Chief Justice Bandial pointed out that even minor modifications to the boundaries of constituencies can impact the outcome of elections. He expressed concern about the sensitivity of delimitation issues in Sindh and highlighted the need to address grievances arising from incorrect delimitations.

Chief Justice Bandial also inquired about the timeline for general elections. In response, the Director General (Law) of the ECP, Muhammad Arshad, indicated uncertainty about the election date, prompting Chief Justice Bandial to suggest that all issues should be resolved before the polls.

The Supreme Court, after hearing arguments, referred the matter back to the Election Commission, urging the electoral body to ensure a transparent and fair delimitation process.
