Incident triggers panic, event cancelled
The shooting incident occurred late Saturday during the prestigious dinner held at the Washington Hilton, attended by top US officials, journalists, and celebrities.
According to international media reports, a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint outside the main ballroom, triggering panic among attendees.
Secret Service agents immediately evacuated President Trump, the First Lady, and senior officials, while guests reportedly took cover under tables as security teams responded.
Authorities confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody. At least one law enforcement officer was struck but survived due to a bulletproof vest. No fatalities were reported.
Swift security response
Officials said the attacker attempted to breach a highly secured screening area before being neutralised by law enforcement. The incident is being treated as an isolated attack, and investigations are ongoing.
The White House later confirmed that all protected individuals, including President Trump and other senior officials, were unharmed.
Dinner disrupted amid chaos
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner — a major annual event celebrating journalism and attended by political leadership — was abruptly cut short following the incident.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as gunshots were heard near the venue, prompting authorities to evacuate the hall and cancel the remainder of the event.
President Trump later indicated that the event would be rescheduled with enhanced security measures.
Global reactions
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement adds to a growing list of international reactions condemning the violence and expressing relief over the safety of attendees.
His message underscored solidarity with the United States during a moment of security concern at one of its most prominent political gatherings.
