ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expanded eligibility for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s nationwide fuel relief scheme, announcing that citizens do not need to have a motorcycle or vehicle registered in their own name to qualify for the weekly Rs500 petrol subsidy.

The clarification was made during a joint press conference in Islamabad by Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani and Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, who said the digitally managed programme had already reached 4.7 million beneficiaries within its first week.
Non-owners can also qualify
Bilal Azhar Kayani said eligible applicants could receive the subsidy even if the vehicle or motorcycle was registered in someone else’s name, provided they possessed the vehicle and its valid registration documents.
He said the measure was introduced to ensure that genuine users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws and small cars are not excluded simply because ownership records differ from actual possession.
The minister added that the government had deliberately kept the application process simple so that deserving citizens could receive the weekly Rs500 petrol relief without unnecessary hurdles.

Millions register within one week
Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the response to the relief package had exceeded expectations, with 5,875,199 people registering for the scheme so far.
According to the minister, the digital platform has generated 6,131,781 registration tokens, while 4.7 million eligible citizens have already received the weekly fuel subsidy.
She said the programme was designed to cushion low-income households from rising international petroleum prices by delivering financial assistance directly to eligible users.

Technology driving transparent relief
The IT minister said the government was relying on a digital registration and verification system to ensure transparency and minimise delays in the distribution of subsidies.
She noted that multiple government institutions were working together to process registrations, verify eligibility and deliver relief efficiently, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was personally monitoring the scheme’s progress.
Bilal Azhar Kayani said the government’s objective was to ensure that public welfare initiatives reach deserving citizens directly through modern digital mechanisms, while maintaining transparency in the identification of beneficiaries.

Scheme targets everyday commuters
The fuel relief programme primarily covers motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws and small cars, offering Rs500 worth of petrol every week to eligible beneficiaries.
