Pakistan to Remain Under Grip of Cold

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has said that the intensity of cold was increasing in the country after a snowfall and rain in hilly areas.

According to the Met Office, Lahore also received its first winter rain as a few places in plain areas of Punjab remained under the grip of fog in the early morning Wednesday.

The Met Office said that most parts of the country will continue to bear the brunt of fresh chill weather during the next 24 hours.

According to the Met Office, a maximum of 12 degrees Celsius (°C) temperature was recorded in Islamabad, 17°C in Lahore, 24°C in Karachi, 12°C in Peshawar, 5.5°C in Quetta, and 7°C in Gilgit.

With the onset of the cold season, the demand for winter delights has risen with people thronging markets and stalls to have winter delicacies such as soup, gajar ka halva, yakhni and desi eggs.

The demand for second-hand clothes at flea markets has also risen in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi with the arrival of the winter season.

Synoptic situation:

According to the synoptic situation, a westerly wave was present over the western and upper parts of the country and may persist in the upper parts till tomorrow.

During the last 24 hours, rain-wind/thunderstorms (snowfall over the hills) occurred in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. However, dry weather prevailed over other parts of the country, the Met Office said.

The lowest minimum temperatures of -8 C was recorded in Leh, -6 C in Kalam, -6 in Babusar, Bagrote and Malam Jabba, -2 C in Skardu and Astore -3 C in Gupis, Hunza, -1 C in Kalat and 00 in Quetta.
