ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has launched a week-long nationwide polio vaccination campaign today, targeting more than 45 million children under the age of five to address a troubling resurgence of polio cases in the country.
Earlier, Pakistan will launch a week-long nationwide polio vaccination campaign on Monday, targeting more than 45 million children under the age of five to address a troubling resurgence of polio cases in the country.
Health officials said that the campaign will run from October 28 to November 3, immunizing polio vaccines alongside Vitamin A supplements to bolster immunity.
The Pakistan Polio Programme organized the campaign to counter the surge in polio cases reported this year, with 41 cases recorded across 71 districts. Officials underscored the government’s resolute commitment to eradicating polio. Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza Farooq, called on parents and caregivers nationwide to actively participate in the campaign.
“Under the Prime Minister’s guidance, we are re-energized in our efforts to combat polio,” said the Focal Person. “Starting October 28, our polio workers will reach every corner of Pakistan, delivering the vaccine and securing a healthier future for our children.”
The Focal Person warned of the current heightened risk, with the poliovirus detected in 71 districts, urging parents to prioritize vaccinating their children. “The Government of Pakistan is bringing this vaccine directly to your doorsteps. Please welcome and support our dedicated health workers by ensuring your children are vaccinated,” she added.
Muhammad Anwar-ul-Haq, Coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication, highlighted the necessity of collective action against the disease. “Polio has no cure, but it can be prevented with this readily available vaccine. With the threat at an all-time high, we must act as one nation to keep our children safe through vaccination,” he stated.
To support the campaign, a Sehat Tahhafuz Helpline (1166) and a 24/7 WhatsApp Helpline (0346-7776546) are available to assist parents and report any children missed during the drive.
