ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of a landmark peace agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending months of military confrontation in Geneva on June 19.
Earlier in the day, the prime minister stated that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran had been reached and would be formally signed on 19 June in Switzerland.
Addressing the National Assembly on Monday, he said the ceremony will take place on Friday, 19 June, in Geneva, marking what he described as a “historic milestone” for global peace and diplomacy.
He said that after more than three months of sustained diplomatic efforts, Washington and Tehran have agreed to an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including related tensions in the wider Middle East region.
“This is not merely an agreement between two countries, but a victory for dialogue, restraint and diplomacy,” the prime minister said, congratulating the people of Pakistan and the international community on the development.
The prime minister also acknowledged the contributions of Pakistan’s political leadership, thanking former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for his guidance, as well as President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and other political stakeholders for their support during the diplomatic process.
He further noted that both American and Iranian leadership demonstrated patience and political maturity throughout negotiations, which ultimately paved the way for the breakthrough agreement.
The premier described the development as a “new dawn for peace”, expressing hope that the accord would contribute to long-term regional stability and improved international relations.
Pakistan has consistently supported diplomatic efforts during the period of tensions between the United States and Iran and remained committed to peaceful solutions to international disputes.
In his speech, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged several international leaders for their role in supporting the peace process, praising the “constructive contribution” of Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, along with the leadership and cooperation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He also extended appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting China’s supportive role in the process. In addition, he thanked other countries, including the United Kingdom, European Union member states, and additional friendly nations for what he described as their backing at a “historic moment.”
The prime minister stated that nations had long aspired to gain the level of “respect and dignity” that Pakistan has now achieved through its contribution to the peace efforts. He described the development as a significant milestone, saying it would be remembered as a proud chapter in history for Pakistan.
PM Shehbaz also paid strong tribute to Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, crediting him with tireless commitment during the period. He said the military chief worked continuously, day and night, to help prevent escalation and support peace efforts, even when negotiations appeared to be on the verge of collapse.
He further remarked that without sustained engagement, the opportunity for peace could have been lost, underscoring the “exceptional role” played in keeping the process alive.
The prime minister additionally acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for his engagement with Iranian counterparts, as well as the broader efforts of officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
