LAHORE: With the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup now just 18 months away, Pakistan Cricket Board has activated its high-performance roadmap, approving a mandatory four-team one-day tournament in Multan from 11 to 18 August designed to refine the national white-ball pool and accelerate preparations for the global event.

The competition, which will feature Pakistan’s leading ODI specialists, represents a calculated intervention by the PCB’s think tank to build a robust talent pipeline and identify the core group of players capable of ending the nation’s semifinal drought, a wait that stretches back to the 2011 World Cup.

PCB Sources confirm that participation will be compulsory for all centrally contracted white-ball cricketers, signaling the board’s intent to leave no room for complacency.

Balancing domestic priorities with franchise commitments

The carefully selected tournament window reflects the PCB’s strategic balancing act between domestic assessment and international franchise obligations. The 11–18 August schedule allows Pakistan players to feature in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which is set to run from 7 August to 20 September and will comprise 39 matches.

Upon conclusion of the Multan tournament, the PCB is expected to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to eligible players for the remainder of the CPL season. Several Pakistan cricketers are already slated to participate in the CPL, including Maaz Sadaqat, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Sufiyan Muqeem, Saad Masood, Usman Khan, and Salman Irshad.

Aaqib Javed: ‘The time to begin is now’

Director of High Performance Aaqib Javed, speaking on the PCB’s ‘Straight Drive’ podcast alongside Salman Butt, outlined the methodology behind the initiative and stressed the urgency of early planning .

“We have around 18 months until the 2027 World Cup, so this is the right time to begin our preparations,” Javed stated . “The selectors and coaches sat together and designed this four-team tournament. Four balanced sides will be selected, and all white-ball players will take part”.

Role-centric selection model to replace traditional approach

In a significant departure from conventional selection practices, Javed revealed that the playing XIs in the Multan tournament will be determined by the specific roles assigned to each player rather than reputation alone. This role-centric approach is intended to provide the management with a clearer evaluation of player combinations and tactical adaptability under competitive conditions.

“The playing XIs will be selected according to each player’s role,” Javed explained. “This tournament will help us determine which group of players should form the core of our plans going forward”.
