ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to achieve another landmark in its sporting history after the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) announced that the country will host two consecutive ITF W15,000 Women’s Futures tournaments in October 2026, providing local players with a rare opportunity to compete for international ranking points on home soil.

The tournaments will begin on October 5 in Islamabad and will be staged ahead of the Billie Jean King Cup, marking the first time Pakistan has hosted two back-to-back ITF W15,000 Women’s Futures events. The development is being hailed as a major step forward for women’s tennis in the country and a reflection of the PTF’s efforts to expand international competition opportunities for female athletes.

Historic milestone for Pakistan tennis

The announcement represents another significant achievement for the Pakistan Tennis Federation as it continues to enhance the country’s standing in international tennis.

PTF President Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi said the federation had successfully created competitive opportunities for male players through ITF Men’s Futures tournaments and was now extending similar opportunities to women.

He noted that the events would allow Pakistan’s leading female players to earn valuable ranking points, gain international exposure and compete against overseas opponents without the burden of costly international travel.

Major boost for women’s tennis development

The tournaments are expected to benefit a number of Pakistan’s top and emerging female players, including Ushna Suhail, Mahin Aftab, Soha Ali, Romaisa Malik, Bismal Zia, Meheq Khokhar, Zunaisha Noor, Zainab Ali Raja, Fatima Ali Raja and Laibah Durab.

The initiative is also expected to play a key role in preparing the national squad for future international competitions, including the Billie Jean King Cup.

PTF reaffirms commitment to women’s tennis

The Pakistan Women’s Tennis Association, established in 2024, continues to work towards the growth and empowerment of women’s tennis across the country.

Association President Asma Khawar Khawaja described the tournaments as an important step in strengthening Pakistan’s position within the international tennis community and supporting the development of future champions.

Meanwhile, PTF Secretary General Col Zia-ud-Din Tufail termed the hosting of back-to-back ITF events a major achievement, saying it would significantly increase international exposure for Pakistani players while raising the profile of the sport nationwide.

With Islamabad preparing to welcome international competitors next year, the twin tournaments are expected to mark a new chapter in the development of women’s tennis in Pakistan.
