KARACHI: India’s emerging wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in Kolkata in connection with a case involving allegations of rape, criminal intimidation, and other sexual offences, Indian media reported on Tuesday.

The arrest follows a Calcutta High Court order directing police to apprehend the cricketer.

Arrest and legal proceedings

Porel was detained late Monday night from Emami City under Dum Dum Police Station jurisdiction by Hooghly district police and was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, where his bail application was rejected and he was sent to three-day police custody.

Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that it was made in connection with a case registered at Mogra Police Station.

Details of the complaint

The case was filed on June 23 by a medical student from Karnataka, who alleged that she was in a relationship with Porel for approximately three and a half years, and that he engaged in a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage.

She also accused him of subjecting her to assault, criminal intimidation, illegally confining her, and denying her food during an incident in Delhi on April 2.

A case has been registered against Porel under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with sexual intercourse obtained through a false promise of marriage, along with provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Court directives and career impact

Following the complaint, the woman approached the Calcutta High Court, citing police inaction. On July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed police to arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices to prevent any dissemination of private material linked to the complainant. A pen drive has already been seized and sent for forensic examination.

Porel, who made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals in 2023 and has accumulated 769 runs across 35 matches, has not played any competitive cricket since the conclusion of the 2026 IPL season.
