ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister has reiterated the importance of respect for international law and implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, particularly on Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir disputes.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Ambassador Olara Otunnu, candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, along with Ruhakana Rugunda, Special Envoy of the President and former Prime Minister of Uganda, in Islamabad on Friday, the Foreign Office said.
“They exchanged views on the evolving global landscape and challenges facing the multilateral system,” it said.
Ishaq underscored Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism and stressed the need to strengthen the system, including through effective implementation of understandings and decisions reached in multilateral fora.

He expressed the hope that the next UN Secretary-General would play an effective role in strengthening the UN’s capacity to address contemporary global challenges.
Ambassador Otunnu appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to international peace and security, including as part of UN peacekeeping operations. He commended Pakistani leadership’s diplomatic efforts for regional peace and stability.
Ruhakana Rugunda also extended an invitation to Ishaq Dar to visit Uganda.

Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasised that Pakistan would continue to render strong and abiding support for multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in global affairs.
He was talking to Ambassador Olara Otunnu, the candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Ambassador Olara Otunnu was accompanied by Ruhakana Rugunda, the Special Envoy of the President of Uganda and former Prime Minister of Uganda.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.
He also underscored the need to ensure respect for international law and international treaties.
The Prime Minister expressed the hope that the next Secretary-General of the United Nations would continue to focus on the three pillars of the United Nations-peace and security, development, and human rights – in an interconnected and balanced manner.
