ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate telephone conversations with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Turkiye on Sunday, discussing follow-up on understandings reached at the inaugural meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee of the Makkah Defence Alliance in Istanbul.
During his conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the two Foreign Ministers exchanged views on regional and international developments, including matters of mutual interest at multilateral fora, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement.
They also discussed follow-up on the understandings reached at the inaugural meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee of the Makkah Defence Alliance, held in Istanbul, and agreed to remain in close contact.

Deputy PM Dar also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Dar thanked FM Hakan for hosting the inaugural meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in Istanbul.

They followed up on the understandings reached at the meeting and discussed ways to further advance cooperation of the Makkah Defence Alliance, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said.
The two Foreign Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international developments. They also discussed matters of mutual interest and opportunities to further strengthen cooperation at multilateral fora. The two agreed to remain in close contact.

On August 7, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression, which stipulated that an armed attack against any of the three countries would be regarded as an attack on all.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the agreement.
During the Istanbul meeting, the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was renamed the “Makkah Defence Alliance”, with its secretariat to be based in Riyadh.
The first Secretary General of the Makkah Defence Alliance will be from Pakistan for a period of three years.
During the Istanbul meeting, the three countries agreed to further institutionalise their cooperation under the Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence, seeking to strengthen solidarity, enhance the credibility and effectiveness of their collective deterrence and defence, and contribute to efforts for a just, inclusive and lasting peace in the region.
In a joint statement, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye said they would work together within the framework of the Makkah Agreement to promote sustainable peace and stability in the region and continue supporting de-escalation and restraint to encourage the peaceful resolution of crises.

The two Foreign Ministers discussed Pakistan-Egypt bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international developments. FM Badr also invited Deputy PM Dar to hold a bilateral visit to Egypt at his earliest convenience.
They reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties, remain engaged and involved in regional security matters. They also agreed to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
