ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector with a focus on various refinery upgradation and investment projects.

The consensus was reached during a meeting between Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, in Islamabad on Thursday, according to a press release issued by the ministry.

They discussed issues of mutual interest and agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

The minister thanked Saudi Arabia for its continued support in helping meet Pakistan’s energy needs, noting the special arrangements for petroleum supplies that have been particularly valuable during challenging times.

Both sides reviewed ongoing cooperation in the petroleum sector and explored ways to strengthen long-term energy ties.

The Saudi ambassador reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s energy security and assured continued collaboration in this regard.

It was also noted that during recent engagements between both countries at the technical level, the consultations are making positive headway for long-term cooperation.

Both sides are also collaborating closely to explore potential refinery upgrades and investment opportunities.

The Saudi ambassador appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace and regional stability, acknowledging its continued efforts to support stability in the region.

The minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening its strategic energy partnership with Aramco, while expressing appreciation for the Kingdom’s long-standing support and cooperation.

He added that the Government of Pakistan is working to meet the country’s energy needs and greatly values Saudi assistance in this regard.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share long-standing, cordial relations spanning several decades, with cooperation across key sectors including defence, trade, economy, agriculture, livestock, and minerals.

Saudi Arabia remains Pakistan’s largest source of remittances and hosts more than 2.5 million Pakistani expatriates, highlighting the depth of economic and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Last month, Saudi Arabia committed $3 billion in additional financial support to Pakistan and agreed to extend an existing $5 billion deposit.
