Pakistan, Russia Prime Ministers Discuss Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a warm and constructive meeting today with Russian counterpart Mikhail Mishustin at the Prime Minister’s House.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a broad range of topics related to bilateral cooperation and noted the positive progress in Pakistan-Russia relations over the past two decades. They emphasized the importance of continuing robust dialogue and collaboration in trade, industry, energy, connectivity, science, technology, and education.

The Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was on a two-day visit to Pakistan for the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting.

 

Reflecting on his first visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed a desire to build a lasting friendship with Russia. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening political, economic, and defence ties with the Russian Federation. Both leaders agreed to enhance collaboration in multilateral forums, including the United Nations and SCO, and Prime Minister Sharif thanked Russia for supporting Pakistan’s bid for BRICS membership, which represents a step toward deeper global cooperation.

The Prime Minister also recalled his fruitful meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Astana in July, where they had discussed ways to elevate bilateral relations. He highlighted the need for direct flights between the two countries to improve connectivity.

Prime Minister Mishustin commended Pakistan for the excellent arrangements made for the SCO meeting and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He expressed a strong desire to further enhance cooperation between Russia and Pakistan.

Both leaders agreed to maintain close collaboration on mutual interests, promote cultural exchanges to strengthen people-to-people relations and improve cooperation between the banking sectors of both countries to facilitate trade and investment.
