ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest safety and security standards in the transport of radioactive materials, emphasising the critical importance of uninterrupted supplies for medical diagnosis and treatment.

Chairman of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), Zia Hussain Shah, made the commitment at a five-day inter-regional workshop on “Denial of Shipment (DoS) of Radioactive Material” held at PNRA Headquarters, Islamabad.

The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) conducted the conference in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), according to a press release issued by PNRA on Thursday.

The workshop brought together National Focal Points and experts from more than 16 countries to discuss regulatory challenges, risk perception, and the need for enhanced coordination and information sharing.

In his concluding remarks, Zia Hussain Shah, reaffirmed that Pakistan remains fully committed to maintaining the highest safety and security standards in the transport of radioactive material.

He stressed that the supply of radioactive material is vital for ensuring the continuity of medical diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, IAEA representative Shazia Fayyaz noted that despite an established regulatory framework, challenges in the shipment of radioactive materials persist.

She emphasised the need for practical and coordinated international solutions to address these issues.

The five-day workshop concluded with participating countries pledging to strengthen cooperation and adopt effective measures to overcome shipment denial challenges.
