PESHAWAR: Pakistan’s role as a vibrant hub for cultural diplomacy took centre stage as a high-level Chinese cultural delegation visited the China Window in Peshawar, lauding its sustained efforts to promote Chinese culture and strengthen the enduring bonds of Pakistan-China friendship while agreeing to launch reciprocal people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
Advisor to the China Cultural Centre in Pakistan, Ms. Bai Jie, and Director of the Pak-China Cultural & Economic Progress Welfare Organisation, Chen Tiantang, toured the cultural centre’s galleries and were briefed on its wide-ranging cultural, educational, and public diplomacy initiatives.
The Chinese guests expressed particular appreciation for programmes aimed at familiarising Pakistani youth with Chinese language, culture, history, and the time-tested friendship that has defined bilateral relations for generations.
“We are deeply impressed by the vibrant platform China Window has created for cultural understanding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” remarked Bai Jie during the visit. “Such institutions play an indispensable role in transforming the strong state-to-state relationship into deeper connections at the public level.”
Bridging nations: A vision for reciprocal exchanges
During discussions that followed the tour, both sides explored the possibility of launching reciprocal cultural exchange visits between citizens of Pakistan and China, a proposal that received enthusiastic backing from the Chinese guests. Bai Jie and Chen Tiantang described direct interaction between ordinary citizens, professionals, students, cultural representatives, and members of civil society as an effective means of promoting mutual understanding and lasting friendship.
China Window offered to take the first practical step by hosting a delegation from China in Pakistan, inviting a small group of Chinese citizens to experience the country’s rich cultural heritage, hospitality, and warmth. Under the proposed initiative, the centre would arrange accommodation, meals, local transportation, and a comprehensive programme of cultural, educational, and recreational activities.
The proposed visit would also provide the Chinese delegation with opportunities to interact with Pakistani students, academics, professionals, journalists, and representatives of different sectors while visiting historical, cultural, and tourist attractions. The initiative is intended to give the guests first-hand exposure to Pakistani society, hospitality, and culture, an experience that would deepen their understanding of the country and its people.
A two-way street: Strengthening ties through people-to-people connectivity
It was agreed in principle that such exchanges should not remain one-sided and that reciprocal visits of Pakistani delegations to China should also be encouraged in the future. Representatives of China Window emphasised that while Pakistan-China relations enjoy an exceptional strategic partnership, greater emphasis on people-to-people connectivity would give the friendship an even stronger social foundation.
“The bond between our nations has always been exceptional at the governmental level,” observed a representative. “It is now time to build the same strength at the grassroots level, where ordinary citizens from both countries can connect, share, and grow together.”
