ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has expressed Pakistan’s solidarity and full support for Malaysia in the wake of catastrophic cyclone-induced floods that have ravaged several Southeast Asian countries.
The prime minister held a telephonic conversation on Friday with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, to convey condolences on behalf of the people and government of Pakistan.
The devastating rains triggered flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, Indonesia’s Sumatra region, southern Thailand, and northern Malaysia, with the combined death toll surpassing 1,000.
PM Shehbaz expressed deep sorrow over the widespread destruction and the tragic loss of lives. He prayed for the swift recovery of those injured or displaced and assured Prime Minister Ibrahim that Pakistan “stands firmly with Malaysia in this difficult time.”
He also offered “all possible assistance” to support Malaysia’s ongoing rescue and relief efforts. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim thanked PM Shehbaz for the heartfelt gesture, stating that it reflected the close and friendly relations between Pakistan and Malaysia.
Pakistan has also been extending relief to Sri Lanka, where Cyclone Ditwah has caused severe devastation and claimed more than 450 lives. Earlier this week, Pakistan dispatched an urban search and rescue team to Colombo to assist recovery operations.
The call between the two leaders underscored Pakistan’s commitment to standing by regional partners during humanitarian emergencies.
