ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade and investment cooperation, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assuring European businesses of continued government support to facilitate economic engagement.

The assurance came during a meeting with a visiting EU business delegation in Islamabad, where the prime minister emphasised that the EU remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner and a key destination for its exports.

He said the government would continue efforts to strengthen commercial ties and create a conducive environment for foreign investment, while maintaining focus on economic stabilisation despite regional challenges, including rising oil prices.

The prime minister said the EU-Pakistan Business Forum could serve as a platform to deepen economic engagement and unlock new opportunities for cooperation.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting stronger trade and investment ties with the bloc.

“The Government would continue making serious efforts to facilitate the growth of trade and investment relations with the EU,” he said.

The delegation, led by Peteris Ustubs, is in Pakistan to participate in the EU-Pakistan Business Forum, which aims to boost business-to-business linkages between the two sides.

Participants expressed optimism that the forum would lead to deeper economic cooperation, with more than 600 B2B meetings expected across sectors such as energy, communications, and information technology.

The EU side highlighted strong investment potential in Pakistan and appreciated the government’s support in facilitating business engagement, while also acknowledging Islamabad’s role in promoting regional stability.

The prime minister also referred to his recent discussions with Antonio Costa on regional security and avenues to further strengthen Pakistan-EU relations.

Senior Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, were also present at the meeting.
