Pakistan, China Sign Multiple Agreements During PM Shehbaz’s Beijing Visit

New agreements covering trade, agriculture, education, climate cooperation and media reflect expanding strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing.

BEIJING: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday witnessed the signing and exchange of multiple agreements, memoranda of understanding (MoUs), protocols and cooperation documents aimed at broadening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

The signing ceremony took place in Beijing during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to China, as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their longstanding strategic partnership.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the agreements were designed to strengthen collaboration in trade, investment, agriculture, science and technology, climate change, education, media cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Among the key documents signed was the Executive Programme on Educational Cooperation and Exchanges, intended to enhance academic collaboration and institutional partnerships between the two countries.

The two sides also signed protocols related to agricultural trade, including a Protocol on Inspection, Quarantine and Sanitary Requirements for Dried Fruits and Nuts, as well as a Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for Maize, aimed at facilitating agricultural exports and improving market access.

In the agriculture sector, both countries exchanged an MoU on Strengthening Development Cooperation in Agriculture and a Letter of Exchange concerning animal vaccines, reflecting efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and livestock cooperation.

The signing ceremony further included an MoU on Deepening Exchanges and Cooperation in the Field of Economic Development, highlighting ongoing coordination on economic planning and development initiatives.

To expand environmental collaboration, Pakistan and China signed an MoU on Cooperation in the Fields of Environment and Climate Change, underscoring growing engagement on sustainability and climate-related challenges.

In the education and diplomatic training sectors, the two sides exchanged an MoU between Pakistan’s Foreign Service Academy (FSA) and the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), alongside another agreement between the Party School of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Pakistan’s National School of Public Policy (NSPP).

An additional MoU was signed on the Joint Implementation of the Human Resource Development Cooperation Programme for 2026, aimed at strengthening professional training and capacity-building initiatives.

The two countries also concluded an MoU on Conformity Assessment, which is expected to support trade facilitation and standardisation cooperation. Scientific collaboration featured prominently in the agreements, including an MoU between the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST).

In the media sector, cooperation agreements were signed between China’s Xinhua News Agency and the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), as well as between China Media Group (CMG) and Pakistan Television (PTV) for joint documentary production.

Pakistan and China also signed an MoU on Supporting Free Trade and Multilateralism, reflecting shared positions on international economic cooperation and global trade mechanisms. Additionally, a sister-province relationship agreement was established between Zhejiang Province in China and Punjab Province in Pakistan to promote regional-level cooperation and exchanges.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the agreements reflected the increasing depth and diversity of Pakistan-China relations and would open new avenues of cooperation in sectors directly linked to the welfare and prosperity of the people of both countries.

The latest agreements come as Islamabad and Beijing continue efforts to expand economic, technological and strategic cooperation under their longstanding bilateral partnership, including collaboration linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
