ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), in a joint intelligence-based operation with law enforcement agencies, has arrested four people, including two officials of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), after uncovering a network involved in issuing illegal identity documents to Afghan nationals.

According to an FIA spokesperson, those arrested include Inam-ul-Haq, Assistant Director of NADRA; Fayyaz Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Director of NADRA; Junaid Ahmed, a NADRA watchman; and Muhammad Umar Shah, a private agent.

“According to the preliminary investigation, the suspects were allegedly involved in facilitating the issuance of fraudulent identity documents for Afghan nationals, tampering with official records, and other illegal activities,” FIA said in a statement and added that “Initial evidence indicates that the network has links to terrorist elements, and further in-depth investigations are underway.”

The FIA said the suspects facilitated the illegal issuance of national identity cards to Afghan nationals, manipulated official records and assisted in other unlawful activities.

The agency said preliminary evidence had identified links between the network and terrorist elements. It added that investigations were continuing to determine the full scope of the network and identify all those involved.

Investigators seized documents and other evidence during the operation and expanded the investigation, the FIA said.

The agency said further arrests and significant developments were expected as investigators pursued other facilitators and key figures linked to the network.

Anti-Terrorism Charges

The FIA said the suspects would be booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act in addition to other relevant laws.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating organised criminal networks involved in facilitating terrorism, issuing illegal identity documents and activities that threaten Pakistan’s national security.
