DALLAS, United States: One person was killed after a suspected sniper opened fire on a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Dallas on Wednesday.
The gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The incident is part of a recent pattern of attacks targeting ICE facilities across the United States.
The motive behind the Dallas shooting remains unclear, and no law enforcement officers were reported injured, according to officials cited by Fox News.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged the ongoing uncertainty, stating: “While we don’t know the motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop.”
Dallas police said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that a suspect opened fire at a government building from a nearby structure. Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds; one later died at the scene. The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was carried out by a sniper positioned outside the facility, with shots hitting individuals inside a “secure detainee location,” Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons told CNN.
He confirmed that three individuals were down, including the shooter, though their conditions were not immediately known.
The ICE field office in Dallas has been the focus of repeated protests throughout the summer. In late August, the facility received a bomb threat, and a suspect was arrested, according to a US Department of Justice official who spoke to CBS.
Just last month, gunfire was reported at ICE offices in San Antonio, Texas, in what authorities described as a “targeted attack” against federal employees. While no injuries were reported, ICE blamed the incident on “political rhetoric” and “misinformation” surrounding the Trump administration’s detention policies.
Another violent incident occurred on July 4 at an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas, when a protest escalated into a confrontation with police. During the clash, an officer was shot in the neck but survived.
US Vice President JD Vance addressed the latest attack on social media, posting: “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”
