NEW YORK: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded the second-biggest global opening weekend in cinema history, earning an estimated $927 million in worldwide ticket sales and providing a significant boost for Marvel Studios after a series of mixed box office performances.
The latest instalment in the Spider-Man franchise, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, trails only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with more than $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
The film also posted the second-largest opening weekend in North America, generating $335 million, while international markets contributed $572 million from more than 73,000 cinema screens. China accounted for $121 million in ticket sales, with the United Kingdom adding $49 million over the opening weekend.
Released last week, Brand New Day follows Peter Parker several years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, as he continues fighting crime in a world that no longer remembers his identity as Spider-Man.
The strong debut has already surpassed the film’s estimated production budget of $225 million and is expected to strengthen Marvel’s momentum ahead of the December release of Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige described the opening weekend as “truly phenomenal” and thanked audiences for supporting the film in cinemas.
The success comes after several recent Marvel releases struggled to match the studio’s previous box office dominance. However, Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s strongest franchises, with No Way Home earning nearly $2 billion worldwide.
The global cinema industry has also shown signs of recovery this year, with North American box office revenue expected to exceed $10 billion for the first time since 2019, driven by several blockbuster releases.
