NEW DELHI: India’s experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a 13-year international career in the longest format.
The 36-year-old made the announcement on Friday, November 6, coinciding with the anniversary of his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2013.
Shami finished his Test career with 229 wickets in 64 matches at an average of 27.71, establishing himself as one of India’s leading fast bowlers.
His final appearance in the format came during the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in London.
Shami Reflects on 13-Year Journey
Announcing his decision through a video shared on social media, Shami reflected on the challenges, injuries and achievements that shaped his career.
He also thanked his coaches, trainers, physiotherapists and supporters for their contributions throughout his journey.

“All the ups and downs, I did fall, I did get hurt, I did get injured. But I stood up again for this badge,” Shami said.
He described the 13-year journey as a memorable experience and expressed particular gratitude to fans for their continued support.
Shami said he had received his Test cap on November 6 and chose the same date to bring his international red-ball career to a close.
White-Ball Career to Continue
Despite retiring from Test cricket, Shami confirmed that he would continue playing limited-overs cricket.
He said he remained available for white-ball competitions, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic tournaments.
Shami has not represented India in international cricket since the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in India’s Test bowling history, although he remains active in the shorter formats of the game.
