EAST RUTHERFORD: Lionel Messi’s Argentina will face Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday as the first 48-team edition of the tournament reaches its climax at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Argentina are aiming to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups, while Spain are chasing their second title after lifting the trophy for the first time in 2010.

The final is also expected to be Messi’s last World Cup appearance. At 39, the Argentina captain remains the emotional centre of his team and one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.

“He has made history. He is a legend,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said, urging fans to enjoy what could be Messi’s final appearance on football’s greatest stage.

Argentina have shown remarkable fighting spirit throughout the tournament. They recovered from 2-0 down against Egypt in the last 16 and produced another late comeback against England in the semi-final.

Spain, meanwhile, have looked almost flawless. They have conceded just one goal in seven matches and reached the final after beating France in the semi-finals.

Spain captain Rodri said his side were prepared for a physical contest and would not be distracted by provocation.

Saturday’s third-place playoff saw England beat France 6-4 in a thrilling match. Kylian Mbappe scored twice to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer with 22 goals, one ahead of Messi.

Messi can reclaim the record in Sunday’s final.

The showpiece will be attended by United States President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A star-studded ceremony is also planned, with Tom Cruise, Madonna and Shakira among the headline names.
