TORONTO: Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai has pledged support for Pakistan’s entertainment industry, emphasizing her commitment to nurturing local talent and supporting regional creativity.

She said this during the premiere of her production debut, the Apple TV+ documentary ‘The Last of the Sea Women’, at the Toronto Film Festival.

Malala Yousafzai expressed her enthusiasm for the growth of Pakistan’s entertainment sector, underscoring her past and future contributions. “I have supported a Pakistani film in the past and I will continue to support all Pakistani artists whenever I get an opportunity,” she affirmed.

Her involvement in the film industry is not new; she served as an executive producer on Saim Sadiq’s acclaimed directorial debut, Joyland, which garnered international acclaim.

Malala’s remarks highlighted the immense potential she sees in Pakistan’s creative landscape. “We all should support Pakistan’s entertainment industry; we have such amazing talent in Pakistan,” she said.

“We can cast our people be it as actors or directors, or we can show our support just by watching the local shows as an audience. In all these ways, we can help flourish our entertainment industry.”

In her production debut, The Last of the Sea Women, Malala Yousafzai explores the story of the haenyeo community, a group of women from South Korea’s Jeju island who have sustained their livelihood through traditional diving practices.

The documentary highlights their unique matriarchal society and the challenges they face in preserving their cultural heritage amid modern pressures.

The film, which premiered earlier this week at the Toronto Film Festival, is set to be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting October 11.
