MUMBAI: Legendary Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle, who rose to become a cultural icon, has passed away at the age of 92, her son has confirmed.

“My mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai,” her son Anand Bhosle told reporters on Sunday.

The Veteran playback singer was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital with a chest infection and fatigue over the weekend.

Her remarkable career stretched across more than eight decades, during which she recorded over 12,000 songs.

Born on September 8, 1933, into a musically inclined family, Bhosle began singing at a young age alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, following their father’s passing.

From her early struggles in the 1940s to dominating the charts through the 1950s and 60s, Bhosle didn’t merely sing—she transformed every song she touched.

Her breakthrough came with Naya Daur, followed by an iconic run with legendary composers like O.P. Nayyar, S.D. Burman, and R.D. Burman.

Whether it was sultry cabaret numbers, soul-stirring ghazals, peppy pop tracks, devotional songs, or intricate classical pieces, she adapted effortlessly—treating genres like changing costumes, each one worn with unmatched flair.

Her voice became synonymous with screen legend Helen, elevating countless performances with unmatched energy and style.

At the same time, she proved her emotional depth in timeless works like Umrao Jaan and Ijazat, earning critical acclaim and National Awards.

With thousands of songs across more than 20 languages, and prestigious honours including the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, her legacy is monumental.
