Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan Agree on 3.71km of State Border

BISHKEK: Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev called on his Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Mukhriddin on Monday to discuss delimitation of the joint border and bilateral ties.

The meeting focused on the issue of the border between the two nations. Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev stressed that this is a priority for the country and expressed readiness for a prompt and mutually beneficial solution to this problem, taking into account the interests of both nations, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon also met with Kulubayev.

In accordance with the agreement reached, a meeting of topographic and working groups on legal matters from the Tajik and Kyrgyz government delegations on demarcation and delimitation of the state border was held from January 30 to February 5 Batken in Kyrgyzstan’s Batken region. The talks resulted in the approval of 3.71 kilometers of the Tajik-Kyrgyz state border, Tajikistan’s media reported.

Both sides will now continue their work on defining the remaining border sections in Tajikistan.

The two foreign ministers also discussed the state of and prospects for Kyrgyz-Tajik ties in political, economic, trade, cultural, and humanitarian areas.

Kyrgyz Foreign Minister for Strong Bilateral Ties

The Kyrgyz foreign minister said during the meeting that the country remains committed to the further consolidation of good-neighborly ties with Tajikistan and cooperation within the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and other international organizations.

A program of cooperation between the Tajik and Kyrgyz Foreign Ministries for 2024-2026 was inked following the talks.

The border between the two nations is 972 kilometers long. As of December, both sides had agreed on more than 90 percent of the joint border.
