AMMAN: Jordan said Friday Israel’s fight against Hamas in Gaza was responsible for soaring tensions, after United States and UK forces struck Yemen’s Houthis, adding to fears of regional war.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned the global community against allowing the Israeli government’s racism and hatred to drag the region into conflict.

Safadi said that Israel’s brutal aggression against Gaza and violations of Palestinians’ rights pose a grave threat to regional stability, AFP reported.

He added that kingdom — which in 1994 became the second Arab state to ink a peace treaty with Israel — was closely watching the developments in the Red Sea.

Safadi said that the global community is at a crossroads in terms morality, law of security, and humanitarianism.

Attacks in Yemen

The pre-dawn air attacks on rebel-held Yemen followed weeks of disruptive strikes on Red Sea shipping by the Houthis who say they are acting in solidarity with Gaza.

Friday’s strikes add to escalating fears of wider conflict in the region, where violence involving groups in Yemen as well as in Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria has surged since the Israel-Hamas war started in early October.

Safadi said that Israel is driving the whole region towards greater conflict, tension and wars which could draw in Western nations too.
