GAZA CITY, Palestine: Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least five Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, Palestinian health officials said, as violence continued despite a ceasefire agreement.

Gaza’s civil defence agency said five bodies had been brought to hospitals following separate Israeli attacks in different parts of the Palestinian enclave.

According to the agency, three people were killed in an Israeli drone strike near a community kitchen in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.

Another Palestinian was killed in an Israeli strike in the Mawasi area of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, while a fifth person died after Israeli gunfire in Gaza City, the agency said.

Hospitals in Gaza confirmed receiving the bodies.

The Israeli military said a militant who posed an “immediate threat” to Israeli forces had been killed in Khan Yunis.

The latest violence came as indirect talks between Israel and Hamas aimed at a broader ceasefire.

The truce, which began in October following mediation efforts involving regional and international actors, largely halted the war.

However, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the agreement.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 871 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect.

The ministry says Israel’s military campaign since October 2023 has killed at least 72,760 Palestinians in Gaza.

The Israeli military has said five Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza during the ceasefire period.

On Saturday, the Israeli military announced it had killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the head of Hamas’s armed wing in Gaza.

The military also said it killed Bahaa Baroud, identified as a commander in Hamas’s Operations Headquarters, in an airstrike on Saturday.

According to Gaza health officials, Baroud and another person were killed when their vehicle was struck in Gaza City.
