BEIRUT: Israeli forces continued airstrikes and artillery attacks across Gaza and southern Lebanon on Saturday despite ceasefire agreements remaining formally in place in both territories.

In northern Gaza, two Palestinians were injured after an Israeli drone dropped a bomb on civilians in Jabalia, according to medical sources. Witnesses said another quadcopter drone targeted a camp housing displaced people east of the town.

Israeli forces also demolished Palestinian homes and structures in eastern Gaza City’s Shuja’iyya neighbourhood, triggering large explosions heard across the area.

Heavy artillery shelling and gunfire were reported in northern parts of Gaza, including Beit Lahia, while eastern Khan Younis in southern Gaza also came under intense bombardment, local sources said.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 880 people have been killed and over 2,645 injured in Israeli attacks since a ceasefire was announced last October.

The broader Israeli military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians since October 2023, most of them women and children, while causing widespread destruction to civilian infrastructure.

In Lebanon, fresh Israeli strikes killed at least five people, including one person in al-Rafid town and four others in the Tyre district, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.

The attacks also damaged Hiram Hospital in Tyre and destroyed residential property.

Lebanese officials say more than 3,000 people have been killed and around 1.6 million displaced since renewed Israeli assaults began in March following regional escalation linked to the Iran conflict.

The strikes continued despite a US-mediated ceasefire expected to remain in effect until early July.
