MIRPUR: The Kashmiri shawl industry traces its origins back to the Shahmiri rule in the Himalayan state, with the crafting of the first Kashmiri shawl dating back to 1339. However, it gained worldwide recognition during the later period of the Afghan empire.

Recognized as one of the oldest industries globally, Kashmir’s shawl industry is a testament to the exceptional skills of its artisans and workers, according to a recent report.

Despite the industry’s acclaim, a troubling reality persists. Workers within this sector face ongoing exploitation, despite their remarkable craftsmanship.

Allegations of systematic exploitation have been leveled against the puppet government in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), along with exporters, particularly over the past three decades.

While Kashmir’s shawl industry continues to thrive and attract global attention, it is crucial to address the exploitation faced by its artisans. Preserving this cultural heritage necessitates not only commemorating its past achievements but also ensuring a dignified and equitable future for those contributing to its enduring legacy.
