TEHRAN: Iran has arrested around 200 terrorists that were attempting to make an attack during Arbaeen ceremonies that mark the 40th day of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (third Shia Imam).
According to Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib, terrorists affiliated with Daesh entered Iran and had plans to carry out destabilizing and terrorist activities across the country but were timely arrested.
The official made it clear that the national intelligence unit is keeping a close vigil and confronting all foreign elements who harbour ill will against Iran. He stated that Iran holds spies from different countries under detention.
Commander of IRGC Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour on Saturday said the Islamic Republic Guards Corps (IRGC) neutralized terrorist efforts against religious rituals in the country late last month.
He said that IRGC sent ranger units to border areas and carried out drone and missile attacks on terrorist groups forcing them back to their camps.
Each year millions of Iranians take part in the Arbaeen walk to mark the ceremony.
Arbaeen is participated by millions of people who go to Karbala in Iraq, where the shrine of Hazrat Imam Hussien is located.
