NEW YORK: India kicked off their T20I World Cup 2024 journey with a commanding victory over Ireland, clinching the Group A encounter by 8 wickets at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Despite an early setback with the dismissal of Virat Kohli, India maintained a composed demeanor over the tough pitch throughout the low total chase. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant adopted a controlled approach rather than taking unnecessary risks.
However, the game took a dramatic turn when India’s skipper Rohit Sharma was forced to retire hurt due to a shoulder injury. He scored 52 runs off 37 deliveries. Ireland bowlers had very little to defend a below-par run target of 97 runs.
Earlier invited to bat first, Ireland struggled against India’s fast bowlers, crumbling to a mere 96 all out in 16 overs. Arshdeep Singh dismantled the Irish top order, grabbing both openers’ wickets early on, while Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah continued the onslaught.
Pandya scalped three crucial wickets, while Bumrah’s lethal yorker added two more to his tally. Axar Patel, with his brilliance on the field, contributed with a wicket as well.
Jasprit Bumrah was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his exceptional figures of 2 for 6.
Looking ahead, India’s next challenge awaits them against Pakistan at the same venue on June 9th, where the pitch dynamics will once again play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the game.
