NEW DELHI: Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), was detained at Delhi airport on Saturday ahead of a major protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in voter lists, the party said.

Dipke and fellow CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained before disembarking from a flight in the capital, New Delhi, where the demonstration was due to take place, the CJP said in a social media post.

The organisation described the action as an attempt to prevent its leaders from reaching Jantar Mantar, where the demonstration was planned despite a police refusal to grant permission.

The detention marks another confrontation between Dipke’s rapidly growing movement and Indian authorities. What began as a satirical online response to a controversial remark about young people has developed into a nationwide campaign targeting issues ranging from examination irregularities to alleged manipulation of electoral rolls.

From an online satire project into a movement capable of organising demonstrations and drawing national attention.

New Battle Over Elections

The group has now turned its attention to India’s electoral system, demanding Kumar’s resignation over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.

The commission says the exercise is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries. Opposition parties and activists, however, allege that eligible voters have also been removed, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deny allegations of political manipulation.

The CJP has called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10, with Dipke vowing to proceed despite restrictions. The party says supporters travelling to Delhi have faced detentions and other obstacles.

Authorities have mounted a major security operation across the capital, deploying more than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel, barricading roads and restricting access to the planned protest area. Police say the restrictions are intended to prevent overcrowding and maintain public order.

India

The dispute over voter-list revisions has brought the movement into confrontation with election authorities and the government. Dipke’s detention, according to the CJP, is part of an effort to prevent its leadership from joining the demonstration.

For the movement, the protest represents a shift from demands for accountability in education to a broader challenge over electoral transparency and the right to demonstrate.

Whether it can reproduce the momentum of its earlier campaign will depend on its ability to sustain public support beyond its online following.
