Riyadh Airport Temporarily Suspends Operations After Fresh Attack Leaves Several Injured

RIYADH: King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was attacked on Saturday afternoon, causing a number of injuries, amid continued blatant attacks on civil aviation facilities in Saudi Arabia, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said, adding that the extent of the injuries was being assessed.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said operations at the airport have been temporarily suspended pending a full damage assessment and verification of the safety of its facilities, in coordination with the relevant authorities. Further updates will be announced, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Saudi Foreign Ministry called on citizens whose travel itineraries have been affected due to the suspension of some flights heading to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh to contact the missions of Saudi Arabia in the countries where they are located, in order to request assistance and provide the necessary guidance.

Earlier, Oman condemned attacks targeting Abha and King Khalid international airports in Saudi Arabia, expressing solidarity with the Kingdom and rejecting attacks on civilian facilities and threats to its security.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah received a phone call from Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

During the call, the Omani foreign minister expressed his country’s condemnation of the attacks targeting Abha and King Khalid international airports and its solidarity with Saudi Arabia. He affirmed Oman’s complete rejection of attacks on civilian facilities and threats to Saudi Arabia’s security and the safety of civilians.

The two foreign ministers also discussed the latest regional developments and the importance of supporting diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions and enhance security and stability in the region.

Earlier, Somalia condemned in the strongest terms the Houthis attacks on Saudi Arabia’s airports.

In a statement, the Somali Foreign Ministry affirmed that the attacks constitute a grave violation of international law and a direct threat to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and regional security, SPA reported.

Somalia extended sincere condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The ministry expressed Somalia’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the measures it is taking to protect its security and stability, and called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure in the Kingdom.

Earlier, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia, SPA reported.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed its categorical rejection of the assault, terming it a flagrant violation of international law.

The ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with the Kingdom in all measures undertaken to safeguard its security, national sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents.

The ministry stressed that assaults on civil aviation undermine regional and international peace and stability, extending sincere condolences to the Saudi leadership, government, and people, while wishing the injured a swift recovery.

Meanwhile, the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the attacks carried out by the Houthis on Saudi airports, and a civilian aircraft, SPA reported.

The commission described the attacks as a flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

It called on the international community, the United Nations, and relevant international and regional mechanisms to unequivocally condemn the attacks and take urgent action to prevent their recurrence, stressing the need to hold the terrorist Houthi militias accountable for these acts.

The commission also expressed its full solidarity with the government and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, extended its sincere condolences to the victims’ families, and wished all those injured a speedy recovery.

Similarly, the United Arab Emirates condemned in the strongest terms the attacks launched by the Houthis on King Khalid International Airport and a Saudia aircraft in the Kingdom.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to its security and stability, SPA reported.

The ministry affirmed the UAE’s full solidarity with the Kingdom and its support for all measures taken to preserve its security and stability.

It also expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the victims’ families, as well as to the Kingdom and its people, and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured.

Similarly, Uruguay condemned attacks launched by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, SPA reported.

In a statement, Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Relations expressed solidarity with the Kingdom, its government and people, extended condolences to the victims’ families, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The ministry also expressed deep concern over attacks and threats targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait. It emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of vessels and their crews, respecting freedom of navigation, and upholding the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Uruguay reiterated its support for United Nations efforts, particularly those led by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, to achieve a comprehensive political solution that contributes to restoring peace and stability in the region.
