WASHINGTON: The head of the International Monetary Fund has warned that the global monetary system is not adequately equipped to deal with the growing cybersecurity threats posed by artificial intelligence, following concerns over a newly developed AI model.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva raised the issue ahead of the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington, noting increasing risks linked to advanced AI technologies.

Her remarks came after US regulators held urgent discussions with leading bank executives over potential vulnerabilities tied to a new system developed by Anthropic.

“We don’t have the ability to — us as a world — to protect the international monetary system against massive cyber risks,” she said in an interview.

International coordination

She emphasised the need for stronger safeguards and international coordination to maintain financial stability in the age of AI. “We are very keen to see more attention to the guardrails that are necessary to protect financial stability in a world of AI,” she said.

Georgieva also stressed the importance of global cooperation, warning that the risks are not confined to any one country. “Yes, this is an issue that has been addressed here in the United States, but it is an issue that easily can present itself in other parts of the world, and that is why we need people to cooperate.”

The concerns follow the recent unveiling of Anthropic’s “Mythos” model, which the company said has an unprecedented capability to quickly detect security flaws.

Due to these risks, the firm has limited its release while working with major US companies to test its safety features.

Experts warn that such developments highlight the urgent need for robust protections as AI capabilities continue to evolve rapidly.
