ISLAMABAD: In a groundbreaking start to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC has revealed that the tournament’s opening three days have rewritten cricket’s record books, delivering historic fan attendance, massive viewership numbers, and digital engagement that far surpasses all previous benchmarks.

The 10th edition of T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC announced that a combined total of 44,844 fans attended the opening matches of the 12-team mega event, marking the highest attendance for the opening weekend of an ICC Women’s tournament.

This figure surpasses the previous record of 34,680 set at the Women’s Cricket World Cup last year, underlining the sport’s rapid global expansion.

Pakistan-India clash draws record-breaking crowd

The highlight of the overwhelming fan engagement was the high-voltage encounter between traditional rivals Pakistan and India, which drew a capacity crowd of 18,814 spectators.

This attendance figure now stands as the highest-attended group fixture in ICC Women’s World Cup history, eclipsing the previous record of 15,935, also set during a Pakistan-India clash at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai.

The electrifying atmosphere at the venue reflected the fierce rivalry and the growing public interest in women’s cricket, with fans from both nations creating a carnival-like environment that resonated across the globe.

Opening day thrills and record digital numbers

Earlier, on the tournament’s opening day, 14,865 fans flocked to Edgbaston to enjoy a West End performance of Wicked, followed by hosts England’s dominant victory over Sri Lanka in the curtain raiser, setting the tone for a spectacular tournament ahead.

Beyond the stadiums, the Pakistan-India clash shattered digital viewership records, with India’s renowned streaming platform attracting a staggering 134 million viewers and delivering 1.1 billion minutes of watch time for the match.

This marks the highest digital reach for any league-stage match across all formats in women’s cricket history, showcasing the immense global appetite for the sport.

Digital platforms witness surge in engagement

The ICC further shared that the record-breaking response extended to its digital platforms, which have accumulated more than 753 million views – a remarkable 150 per cent increase compared to the same period during the 2024 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

These unprecedented numbers reflect the growing mainstream appeal of women’s cricket and the successful efforts of the ICC and host nations to promote the game.

With the tournament still in its early stages, cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly await more thrilling encounters and record-breaking moments as the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 continues to unfold.
