BERLIN: At least four people were died after a tragic fire at a hospital in Uelzen, northern Germany, local police said on Friday.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and a “double-digit number” of individuals sustained injuries, with several in serious condition, reported Lueneburg police spokesman.

The blaze erupted at 10:45 pm (2145 GMT), with visible flames on the third floor and significant smoke. Emergency services responded to calls for help, leading to the evacuation of the hospital and eventual extinguishing of the fire.

Initial reports indicated one casualty, but the toll was later updated on Friday.

German media suggests that the four victims were patients. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the fire’s cause, estimating damages exceeding one million euros ($1.1 million).

The police spokesperson emphasized that the investigation is exploring all possible directions to determine the reason for the tragic incident.
